If you don't do many miles, get a 2.0 Turbo. If you do lots of miles, then chance the 1.9 150 and more than likely you'll be ok - it's only because there's so many of them around that you hear a lot of horror stories...

Only other engine worth considering is the 3.0 Diesel as it's an Isuzu lump and doesn't any known major issues.

Unless you want outright performance and can afford the 2.8 turbo, none of the other engines are really worth considering to be honest...

Not sure how old a car you are thinking of getting but the other engine that is rock solid (few issues with the auto box) is the 3.2 (cheap to buy) if you can afford the petrol.

I would go for a petrol, I certainly wouldn't buy a diesel if your only doing 8k.

I have a 2.2 Sri Direct.Economy pretty good.Tax ok (£170) just now! Had a few issues with the car, but overall, I like it. I do around 10k miles a year. Only thing I would say is that although it has a claimed 155bhp, I do not find it 'fast' although I may be comparing it to the Passat Tdi I had before which had loads of torque
