Default Upgrading to Vec C GSI

    Hi all,

A veteran of 4 V6's, 2 cav, 1 mondeo!, currently run a lovely 99 Vec B CDX V6 hatch. Swapping soon to something like an 03 plate vec V6 GSI.

Any advice as to any common faults and pitfalls or as what to expect with the car overall?

    Ta loads!

As in your other post, only the auto boxes seem to give problems, the rest of the engine seems to be very good with only a few having problems.

they are bomb proof... service them well, and change the belt early ( waterpump at same time) and they will easily see over 200K miles...

the auto boxes need looking after... so if you can , get a manual...

with the current economic climate there are some stunning bargains around...i saw an 04 plater with 22K on the clock for under £4K recently....

    Thanks,

can you confirm if the engine is belt or timing chain?

changed mine on the b earlier this year with the pump at the same time but was told that the vec c v6 was chain driven.

    Calibrator,

It's a great car, the Vec-C GSi! Several of them have had problems with crappy VX suspension springs, dodgy rear shock absorbers and one or two other items...

I gather from here that the 3.2 V6 is a strong, reliable engine. It is certainly wonderful to drive! It is responsive, torquey and powerful with a lovely, addictive build up of acceleration as the revs rise over 3,000. Mine is a manual. I can get it to average over 28 mpg when commuting via a mix of fast A-roads and urban/ suburban roads. On a run, I have averaged ovr 38 mpg! And that is despite the performance! And even point-to-point across country on A- and B-roads!

It handles nicely too, for a big front-wheel drive. It is responsive and I do not experience understeer and, since I had the rear shocks done (Network Q under warranty), it feels planted in the bumpy bends too, with little danger of oversteer. It is a more neutral cornering car than my old rear-wheel drive Omega, I'd say.

I would be very hard-pressed to replace the GSi with another car that is as good and practical. That's why it is staying put!
