Looking at his profile it looks like a 1.9 120 cdti.

Do you have the engine management lights on?

So if someone dives you a tow, it will run
Equally, if the car does actually run and you apply power it switched off

I certainly wouldn't be turning the engine over for as long as 10 minutes
Perhaps a dozen times at the most

How about a seized butterfly valve, that seems to be becoming the fault of the month now!

yes its 1.9 cdti i have the car with spanner lite coming on but just havnt reset it from doing the filter. wen it goes,if you give it sharp acceleration it just dies, wont go trying to bump in gear after it does this but wen you stop and giv it a tow it goes in half the length of itself. wen you have power its reaky wen thers no power its not. wots the butterfly valve? cheers guys for answering

Get the codes read. Makes it easier than guessing what could be wrong.

Yes, the VX garage will charge about £30 to read the fault codes - or if your a member of the AA they can do it too, just tell them you have broken and they will come out. The codes will be fairly specific to the actual problem and if read correctly then will really help to sort your problem out.
