    Lightbulb Milltek Exhaust Idea...

Browsing some of the tuners' websites tonight, I happened across Thorney Motorsport. They (and presumably others) sell a Milltek exhaust system for the VXR. It's hideously overpriced (£885 + ) probably because a) it's an approved VXR part and b) it's made by Milltek.

But what got me thinking was the blurb that accompanied it...

So here's what I was thinking. My engine is virtually identical to the VXR, the only real difference being the detuned software. I reckon I could get someone like MIJ to make me an identical exhaust system for about half of that cost.

    Whaddaya think?

    you could.....

i'm about to start experimenting with Decatting the Gsi.... in fact i was having this very discussion with Big Phil last weekend ( you weren't hiding in my workshops were you?.. )..

for the 3.2 it's very possible..worst case is you'd need a sports cat instead as the OBDII platform measures across either side of the top 'pre cats' and the main underfloor cat has no bearing on how the car runs...

lasercut flanges are ordered.....pipes here...i'll let you know soon..

nope, i've looked into and spoke widely to folks about removing the precats..it is possible, but you have to reprogram the engines ECU to remove the last two lambda sensors and make it make fuelling adjustment corrections off the first set only..the guy who had this done ( Sparky VXR ) weighed out several thousand on it, for only mild gains..

So, for now, i'm just dumping the centre cat as it's the biggest restriction and the removal of it is 'blind' to the engines ECU...If the cars weren't OBDII and only had 2 lambda sensors it would be a doddle to do...whack on some BTB manifolds, and rip out the main cat...but no..that would be too easy....

I have de-catted mine.... and have a Remus cat-back system (only a center de-cat) ... as you said Mark.. the ECU doesnt notice its gone as its not monitored at all by Sensors. Massive improvement on throttle response.... (mines a auto so makes a difference!) makes a lovely sound too.. a nice 'roar' when the throttle's opened... not too loud at all.

The Pre-cat.. or Mani cats (manifold cats) would be a massive nightmare to remove.. and would cause massive emmition problems come MOT time!!!.
However my Vectra still Passes emmittion tests with the center Cat removed.. and it also bumped my MPG up by 1or 2 after removing it!!

Only cost me £30 for an exhaust center to make a stainless de-cat piece up and fit it... Well worth it!!!
