Default ??Anyone ever lost a wheel..

Had a little spat today with our transport co_ordinator for BSS who have just took over our company.

I had a new tyre fitted on the sprinter van i use about a week ago,and he pulls me up on the fact that i did not get the wheels checked for tightness after half an hour of fitting, ie was not recorded on my paperwork, the thing was i watched the fitter tork the wheel up when he fitted the thing back on to the van,i stresed to him ,that in 30 odd years of driving i had never lost a wheel and did'nt know anyone else who had either.

?So my question is..Has any one ever had a wheel fall off,and if so what were the circumstances.

Not me mate , something I have always wondered about though. I did have a wheel come loose though whilst driving a 7 1/2 tonner , sheered a few bolts and needed hub replaced , It did'nt have the green pointer torque markers on it though . Funnily enough it did after the new hub was fitted .

Yep in my mini, it over took my while I was sparking on my front brack drum. It turned out some little scrote had tried to steal my alloys, they had got one bolt off but couldn't shift the locking nut, that just worked its way off after a mile of driving.

    Twice.

Once when I was 18 in my brother's Mini. Front nearside fell off when I was doing around 30 (thankfully) right outside Kwikfit in Darlington. The lads in there all ran out and lifted the front end up while I put the thing back on. Very embarassing.

Second time was much scarier. It was in The Falklands in 2005. I hired a Mitsubishi blah-dee-blah for 3 days while I had some time off.

I'm not joking here, but as I was approaching the mine fields outside Stanley, my colleague pointed out of his window and said

    "There's a f**king wheel!!!"

Just as he said that, I found myself looking up into the sky thinking "I know, it's ours!!!"

I held it, it was our rear nearside and afterwards I took photos of the gouge in the road (must have been 40 feet in length) where the disc had cut into the tarmac. We were very lucky as the was a minefield directly adjacent to where we stopped. The lads bought me drinks for the rest of the 3 days.

I lost my n/s drive axle wheels near Brussels about 15 years ago. It had been serviced 2 days before then it was meant to have been retorqued the night before I left. They claim it was but obviously not!

Now there is far more paperwork with it but if you start work at midnight like me what do you do if you've got to go to Newcastle? You can stop and check the wheelnuts after 30km-but how if you're not allowed to under the brilliant HSE laws that say a driver can't use a brace incase you knacker something up? You can keep stopping every 30 mins and check your nut indicators but what happens in the 29 other mins? You can call out ATS at £200 to retorque your nuts and make your boss happy about paying that??!!

If the company hasn't allocated for the retorque you refuse to take the vehicle out- at the end of the day it's the driver's resposibility! Now they say the nuts can be retorqued after the vehicle has stood for 30 mins- however I can't see how that works but it gets your paperwork signed!!

Basically it's all down to the driver but if there's no provision to do anything about it from the employer....................................???

And now the country wonders why people can;t be recruited to keep the country trucking??????????? And that's only the start!!!
