    Default Wireless router

Was the best wireless router nowadays as my old Netgear one has packed up. I use to have a Belkin and always had drop outs.

I've got a Belkin N1 and have no probs at all with it.... until you get too close!
The thing is rubbish, if the signal strength is too high the lappy drops the connection.. crap.

Used to have a Linksys wireless router which was excellent, if I bought another, it'd be Linksys or NetGear for sure...

for complete end user usability and stability = Netgear
for great stability = Linksys (cheap Cisco)

I'd go for another Netgear. I use one and it is bulletproof and never loses sync. We use Linksys at work and they seem robust too but I think Netgear has the edge on performance.

I think the N only gives you an advantage if you are using a compatible (ie recent Netgear N model) wireless card in the laptop as it is very unlikely to be compatible so you would have to shell out on one of those to get any performance improvement. Also the router itself needs to be well positioned as the increased performance drops off quite quickly with distance and obstructions etc.

You can run the N versions in compatibility mode but then you lose all the advantages you've paid for.

Depending on what you're using it for you might not see any benefit at all with the N. Remember that broadband download speeds are generally much slower than your router's wireless performance anyway so th only improvements you would see would be between PCs etc. on your own home network.
