Possibly a faulty or dirty IAC valve?

it doesn't... it uses the stepper motor on the intake flap to hold the rpm higher...

take off the air inlet hose at the intake manifold and see if it's got a dirty butterfly.. if it has , clean it with carb cleaner and see if that helps...

other causes could be wrong mixture, faulty plug etc etc...

does it flag a fault light?...

no does not bring up any lights. but as i see the revs drop to about 400 i quick put my foot on accelerator and rev it a bit then its fine.
i will try the carb cleaner do you think by the sound of the above it could be the dirty carb?

There is no carb, but the carb cleaner will clean the butterfly valve.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

My Vectra used to do this until it had it's last service.

Would fire up, and sound like it was running a tad rough, then the revs would suddenly drop off and engine would cut out.

Would fire up again and be fine, only did this around 2 times in a year.

Took it into Independants for a service, and made sure that plugs etc. were replaced, along with oil + filter + fuel and air filter. Also oil they replaced it with was 5w 30, magnatec. Bin fine since
