How long to let a diesel warm up?

and whats the benefit of doing so / disadvantage of not letting the engine warm up.

Mine seems to drink more diesel when cold..

All engines use more fuel when cold.

Engine operate more efficiently when fully warmed

Oil lasts longer with warm engines

Engines wear less when warm

Engines operate more smoothly when warm.


However, VX do not recommend allowing the engine to idle when first started to warm up. They recommend to drive off immediately.

Diesels usually take longer to reach operating temperature because they have more thermal mass and the combustion process is diffeent to petrols too.
It can take several miles to be fully warmed, depending on what you're doing.

Make sure the engine is fully warmed before giving it some beans.

I typically keep the revs below 2000rpm until the engine temperature needle starts to move, which is after about 5 miles from cold

I've never heard or read anything about VX recommending NOT to idle the engine when cold
Ironically you really should do this for the first 60 seconds to allow the oil to heat up and pass over all the main components
I know you shouldn't sit stationery and applying revs in an attempt to heat the engine up quicker, in some engines you can hear the fuel pump grunting against that!

This is true & it is stated in the vectra b & c handbook...

However, on the colder mornings i have always allowed my current & previous Dti to warm up on idle for a few mins, with no ill effects.

Well yeah, sometimes you have to. Get those windows clear - safety first.

When i used to have my 1.9 about a year ago it took it about 10 min to warm up round about 3 miles or so the 2.2 Direct i find heats up very quick and gets very hot im soon turning the blowers on cold again haha

I usually start the car and then get all the kids and bags out of the house so it has a few minutes of idle every morning, can't see why this would be considered bad?

I think vauxhall are just being on the safeside there.
i dont see why it would be considerd bad either i always let mine have about 1 -2 minuets warm up before i start moving.
when i first start my car in the morning the revs stay around 1k then after a min they drop back to about 650 700.

i always leave mine for a few minutes before moving unless the engine is already warrm of course
