Default Crossing a red light for emergency services

Me missus got fined not too long ago for crossing a red light to allow an ambulance through. I've done it a few times too, but not been fined. If we're breaking the law, why do emergency services expect us to cross it? I understand they have a job to do and the public want to help, but they know it's illegal to encourage or condone motorists to cross the line on a red light. Time the law was changed. Just the other day I all but refused to budge for an ambulance, the lights turned green just in time.

I was told once that not all the Emergency Services are allowed to jump a red light either

Is this true, or still the case

you should not cross the red light under any curcumstances the blues and twos are there as a warning just to let u know there are there, its up to the emergency services to decide how to go around you.

It's true, and it wont pass for a defense in court either.

Can I answer here, before everyone starts speculating?

Damian - On an emergency call, ALL emergency services are permitted to treat red traffic lights (NOT pedestrian crossings) as a 'Stop and Give Way'. Exactly the same as we are permitted to exceed the posted speed limit. This has always been the case.

Izonoky - I feel for your wife, I really do. Was it a traffic light camera? However, we do NOT expect anyone to break the law. It is quite common for us to sit in traffic that cannot (or will not) move, we get used to it!

Personally, I would not go through a red light if I was in my own car. Nor would I drive up the kerb.

I wouldn't go through a red light. Could end up with two incidents instead of one for the ambulance service to deal with.

I'm still wondering if I did the wrong thing moving over to let the ambulance by in Wiltshire. Two ambulances were needed then. One for our crash and one for the original incident.

The fine wasn't so much of a big deal, even though it was a shock. It was just the principle. She thought, like many other motorists, that she was helping (perhaps even wrongly believing she was causing an obstruction).

I don't know if it was a traffic camera, she only told me about a month after she'd paid the fine, and that was only in response to something we both heard on the radio.

Just thought I'd say I feel for your missus too. Most people would do the same. It's something I was told a while ago when I was on a course at work. Only been in that situation once and luckily there was a filter lane which the ambulance used.

I'm not going to incriminate myself...I know someone very well who would ALWAYS cross a red if it was safe to do so to let the emergency services through... I'm absolutely amazed that you could (evidently would) get done for it!
When I think about it I guess it makes more sense never to cross but I.. ahem.. my friend, has never looked at it that way.

I've seen so many stupid police car drivers plough through red lights with and without sirens and or lights and 3 of them in the past 5 years write-off someone elses car through their complete inability to drive "with safety in mind" that I don't think they need any help causing more accidents.

I'll never cross a red again... not that I ever did
