Default front brake pads on gsi 3.2

    hi folks,

had the warning lamp for front brake pads come on last night - does anybody know how much life there will be left in them until they start rumbling...

is it best going for GM pads, or is there a better option? i'm not fussed on price... i.e i'm not necassarily looking for a cheaper option...!!

also, how difficult are they to change...?? don't really want to pay someone else to do it...!!

    cheers,

    ian

You've left it a little too late already, as the sensor will now need to be replaced as well (or short circuited), so you shouldn't hang about much longer. Unless you're going for something "specialist" like EBC Green Stuff pads, then genuine VX are amongst the best you'll find to fit your car - £15 Apac pads and stuff like that aren't as good.

You'll see quite a bit mentioned on here about brake "kits" - a pair of disks and 4 pads from Vx dealers for either front or rear axles for £65+VAT, but bare in mind those pads aren't the standard Vx ones, they're cheaper quality.

Original spec pads from Vx are £70ish, or £50ish if you access to Trade Club prices. Alternatively, check out www.carpartsconnexion.com for discounted parts from Vx dealers; I got a set of front pads from there for £23 in VAT and postage, although £30-£35 seems a more common price.

Fitting is not hard - GSi3.2 has written a How2, plus Haynes can be of help if it's your first time. Remember to ignore any advice about "piston retraction tools" - they're only needed on the rear brakes, due to the handbrake mechanism being located there.

There's lots of threads on this; I think Duncan first noticed it and several other people have confirmed it. They're not bad pads, but not as good as the original/full price ones.

As for the 3.2 and Haynes - there's very little difference in the procedure.

GM pads not bad but not good either IMO...since I changed pads recently the car brakes much much better.
BTW when the warning light pops on, the pads should have like 3-5 mm left I think.
On the other hand yes you cant do the service yourself...if you have the tools and want to have your hands dirty
