Default Company Car & fuel Tax, Is it better to run your own ??

    As above.
Company Car with fuel card Re. Your own car & mileage allowance ??

Now we blinkin already pay hiked up fuel costs & yet the goverment Taxes you again for having company supplied fuel

Car would be a 52 Plate Audi Avant 1.9 Tdi SE

Now of course there would be no maintenance/service costs Etc but is it worth it ??

    Cheers

i think it depends on your milage due to the income tax on it.

The only way to do it is to run the numbers not forgetting the tax allowance on the difference in mileage rates for private car. You need business car insurance as well. A few sites help you do this.

If you do about 13-15000 private miles then the fuel card is worth it - otherwise you are giving more money to uncle gordon's gold plated pension.

At the end of the day if you run your own car its still yours. At the end of 3years with your company you just give it back with at least £18000 missing from your back pocket!!

Being new to this, Or potentially new !! As i have not accepted the job yet.. Does this mean the business who employes you gets some sort of benefit ? Private mileage would be small compared to business, If the business benefits from more miles then they won't let you pinch some to add to the private amount !! Im sure..

Guestimating here , Commute to work would be 72 Miles each way per day, 5 Days a week per year Etc.Then what ever mileage is accrued going to Jobs !! Private on that would probably be about 10,000, Blimey thats adding up, I'll need a Tanker attached

Hmm never thought of it like that, Although a car is an ever decreasing investment !! At least it is & can return some amount of funds if required , Once sold Etc..

I have opted out twice now and dependant on what car you get you can benefit in different ways.

I opted out and get £375 a month for my car and also have a fuel card for all fuel purchased and oil.

Last time a did it I had a vectra SRI and then a signum and without upsetting the thousands on here they were worth nothing with the milage on!

So this time I have PCP'd a BMW 118d M Sport which works out the same as taking a company vectra and then in four years I'll buy the car off BMW for 4K and give it to my wife.

If you want more info p'm me if you want.

As already said makes a big difference on what mileage you do, what petrol rate you get back from your employer etc.

Bear in mind that you cannot claim (for tax purposes) commuting to/from your normal place of work, so even if the company re-imburses you for the fuel you can't claim relief on it.

I had a company car until 4 years ago when we had to switch to an allowance, we weren't given a choice. So far it's probably paid off, even with my 3.2 Auto given I bought it at 15 months old so way off list price.

I only just get enough per mile to cover petrol cost plus a (taxed) monthly allowance which isn't a lot. If I do a lot of business miles (say over 12000) in a year then the tax rebate was nice, but even with a couple of low mileage years my 5 year old Vec has now done approaching 80,000 miles, so is worth not much more than a couple of Mars bars if I were to trade it.

I'm trying to work this one out myself. Basically I am starting to think differently about it, company cars = NO HASSLE motoring, having your own car means YOU have to sort any problems etc
