Default 1.9 cdti cam shaft 54 plate

Help! My vectra 'popped' while moving off on Sunday. The engine died, would not restart and the spanner light came on. Turning the engine over, I could hear rattling. The AA man showed me that my cam shaft wasn't moving and towed me to my local dealer.

The dealer has had the car all day now but still can't tell me what is wrong. It may be a sensor at £200 or a whole engine.

I fear the worst, even though it has only done 58k and has been regularly serviced by them.

I guess it's got a timing chain. Should I expect it to fail after 58K? Should the dealer have changed it at a previous service? Is this a common fault?

    Any thoughts gratefully accepted

It has a belt not a chain. How old is the car? still covered by warranty? If the starter is turning but the cams aren't then I would have thought it has to be a belt problem? But in saying that the AA and the dealer would easily be able to tell you this.

    edit:just realised its a 54 plate

Thanks. Do you think the belt should have been replaced in the recent service? If the cam belt has gone does this mean trashed pistons?

Would have only been replaced if it was due and if they wanted to pay for it. I think they are supposed to be done at 80k or 8 years on the 1.9 150's. It would probably mean trashed valves.

If your cam belt has gone then get on to Vx customer dervices. As your car has received a full main dealer service then push the fact that the cam belt has failed well inside of its specified life and was therefore not of sufficient quality.

    Thanks for the replies.
The dealer has just rung back to say the belt has gone and they are investigating how much damage has been done to the head / valves. They implied that Vauxhall should pay and would persue this when they had a full list of damages.
I'm not counting my chickens yet.

Just make sure they do not intend to bill you in the mean time!

Vauxhall are saying they will not contribute to the fix! We have been talking to the customer services people on 0845 0902044. Is there somewhere else I can contact? How can a CAM belt failure be our problem?
