    Default Suspension Coil Spring Question

    Good morning all

I have found what could be half a coil of a suspension spring on my mates drive and I rather fear it could have come off my Vectra. There is no sign of where it came from on my car but I have been told that this is a common fault on these cars and won't necessarily be obvious.

I have a MOT & service booked for next week and my local garage man is going to have look closer around the springs for this. If I have to have a spring (or are they replaced in pairs) replaced with Vauxhall ones are they likely to go the same way?

I have seen threads here before about alternative makers of spring but are these for lowering or other such change of use? How much do springs cost these days?

Any info on Vectra springs would be most helpful.

    Thanks.

    Brian

I'm sure you'd notice if you had lost part of a spring m8,would'nt go for Vx one's as they are $hit,go for Eibach which are half the price £145,yes it lowers the car 30mm from standard SRI/GSI ride height but will last alot longer and give you a better ride.......

I think the eibach springs have a 5 year warranty compared to VX which is 30 seconds after fitting!

It may well be off your motor, get it checked.

I had a coil snap off one of my front springs on my old Vectra B, the only way I realised was the car sat at a funny angle when parked on flat ground!

The car looks to sit level but then the bit of spring I have is half a turn. I was told that it it not unusual for a piece like this to break off the end and just sit in the cup or whatever the coil springs sits in.

My Vectra is a 1.9CDti SXi and looks to sit fairly low to start with. Weren't these suppose to be a bit lower and stiffer as standard? Is there not an alternative supplier of springs for the original Vauxhall ones?

Quite common for part of the last turn of a spring to snap off. Not restricted to Vx either as I've had it on another couple of cars. You don't really notice if it's a small piece broken as it doesn't affect the way the car sits any more than normal road camber. Certain MOT fail even if its only the last little bit that's broken off (sounds more in your case though).

It sounds so likely especially as the broken bit is half a turn of the coil and looks to be the same diameter as the spring material. Do these springs have to be replaced in pairs do you know?

    Thanks.

Yep you should always replace in pairs.

If you get the eibach springs and your car is already at a lowered height then you shouldnt notice much of a height drop if any, but the springs will be far better than standard.

yes springs and shocks should be changed in pairs, if it of your car then the car should sit lower one side? but as you have mentioned that it doesn't so best bet is to get it checked out asap and go for eibach spring that have also been mentioned as these will lower the car slightly and handle much better

They should be because after a while the spring starts to settle a bit so a new one will be a bit longer and sit a bit higher. If you've not done many miles though (and if your wallet's a bit thin) you could get away with changing just one.
