You will hear it as it spins up. Without fitting a pressure gauge its difficult to know what boost it is producing. Do you hear any wooshing like leaking air?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Not too sure about your model.... but general rule of thumb too check turbos on most cars is either rev it up towards the red line (with a warm car.. not from cold!!!!) then throttle off suddenly... you should here the waste gate/ re-circulation valve 'woosh' and here the turbo spool up and whisle slightly. that way you know the turbo is producing pressure (although you dont know how much?)

another way to check to make sure your turbo is boosting is to squeeze the turbo hose on the turbo discharge side (if its rubber and squeezable) squeeze it flatish.. and hold it flat.. while you do this get someone to rev the car up for you gradually upto wards the red again... and you should feel at about 2000-300 rpm the hose that your squeezing begin to build pressure inside and begin to open the hose and your hand up!!

old school methods... but still used by many a mechanic today!!
