Default Cold Starting glow plug query

Well today was the first cold morning for a long while, the out side temp was 10.5*c, the glow plug light did not come on as it hasn't all summer, the car failed to start with the first turn of the key but did start on the second, does any one know the max temp for the glow plug system to kick in.

My glow light comes on everytime I start the car, just for different lengths of time.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Sopposed to be around 3c

But you'll find everyones is different

sometimes my old vec would come on at 5 / 6 / 7 or sometimes not at all..

It takes the engine temp reading from a coolant sensor near the temp gauge sensor, in the thermostat housing, check that first.

( i gave in in the end with mine a rewired it to have a manual glow plug switch)

Same here. One mild days the light goes out after 1 second or so. On cold winter days, 3 or 4 seconds.

In my 3.0 V6 CDTI the glow plug light comes on for about 2 seconds when the engine is cold and typically between 1/4 and 1 second when the engine is hot or warm
The manual does not even advise that you need to wait for it, it is just to show the system is in operation
It may also come on if your car has a DPF, in which case it will flash
