    Default Brake wear warning light

I am getting the brake wear warning light up intermittently. To be fair it normally appears on each journey but not always. In an effort to try to establish where the problem is, can anyone confirm that it is possible just to remove the sensor itself and link out the plug under the wheel arch - thereby simulating the sensor being present?

I think the problem is with the sensor and/or flying lead but do not want to buy another until I have confirmed this.

I have assumed that the circuit remains closed circuit until the sensor wears and the ECU then sees an open circuit condition and this flicks up the warning light?

    Cheers,

you can bypass the sensor if you want to..or just remove and inspect the old one..if the pads are getting down or there's and outer wear ridge on the disc it'll be starting to illuminate

Thanks. There is definately plenty of meat on the pads so I cannot see that it is a genuine warning. There appears to be damage to the flying lead as it comes out of the sensor itself and I want to either eliminate or confirm if this is the cause before buying a new one. Linking it out would do this.

Just a quick question - I take it that the sensor is sacrificial - i.e, when it illuminates it means that the disc is wearing through the sensor and it would need to be replaced along with the pads? I assume that the sensor is not more complex (like a proximity sensor) where it would activate if the dics gets too close (but not actually touch it).

    Cheers,

No mate , they cost less than a tenner to replace , so u can replace or just snip the terminal off and cross the wires.

yep, it's a sacraficial sensor...and at under a tenner from VX i'd be replacing it rather than bodging it..

Not bodging old bean, just want to ensure that it is where the problem lies. If it is faulty it will get replaced.

Done a bit of diagnosis and it turns out it is the flying lead on the sensor, there is a break in it near the connector.

Easily replaced, and a lot cheaper than replacing the loom in the car as suggested by the dealer????

About £140, but I think that was just for the loom and did not include fitting.
