    Default Heater Blower Prob

My heater doesn't work most of the time on settings 2 and 3 and so yes it sounds like a resistor pack failure. So today I bought one and thanks to the brilliant info on this site, I had it fitted in about 10 minutes. At the time I also checked for water ingress and pollen filter blockages. All fine. The motor seems to spin freely too.

I turned the blower on and for about 10 seconds it worked on '1'. Then it died again.

Basically more often than not it will not work on anything apart from '4'. Sometimes when I get in the car it will work for about 5 seconds on say '3'... then stop running and only work on '4' again. Very rarely it'll work for an entire journey. When I turn the dial to '1' I get do hear a faint click coming from near the relays on the left hand side behind the grove compartment, then and another louder click when the dial reaches '4', at which point the motor always spins up fine. I then get another faint click when I turn it off again.

So it isn't a resistor pack problem and it doesn't sound like the control knob as it is making something click everytime I go from off to 1 and 3 to 4. The temperature is fine too - just the blower speeds.

Not knowing much about electronics has left me a bit foxed with this one. Oh and I'm not covered by any warranties before anyone asks. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help in advance.

    Default heater problem also

hi there. i have the very same problem and it only started happening a few days ago. When the car is up to temperature you can feel warm air if you put your hands on the dash vents. When you turn the blower speed control through 1-3, i can hear a click but the blower doesn't come on. The heater only comes on when on No.4. Aircon, and front and rear demisters work fine. Is there anyone out there who can shed some light on our problem and maybe come up with a solution. As a new vauxhall convert, any information you can give will be appreciated.thanks.

Bax, yours sounds like the resistor pack has failed, usually due to water ingress from the pollen filter area.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Thanks for replying so quickly. it's really frustrating when something goes wrong and you can't figure outwhat it is. With me being new to this, is this a big job? (and expensive) to put right, could non main dealer garages sort it, as main dealers rob you blind don't they? It's not likely to be anything else is it?.........

It could be something else as its just a best guess after reading what you have put. However, its a cheap fix to do yourself, many have - but not me so I cannot help with how to do it.

I would think a dealer would charge a fortune.

    Post reply to bigsig

    Thanks for the information Bigsig.
i've checked your link for the serial no. of the resister pack and jotted it down. was talking to a mate of mine earlier and his mate runs a garage and he has the module for plugging my veccy in to check for fault codes etc. would plugging it in show up this resister pack fault as well as any other underlying problems?

    thanks for your help.

Fault codes are only generated when the fault light (car and spanner) is lit on the dash. If this isn't lit - and hasn't been recently (so no stored codes either) -then there's no point connecting a fault code reader.

I doubt that a fault with the resistor pack would generate a fault code anyway. If you replace the resistor pack and the fan still doesn't work on all speeds, then people have mentioned a blue relay - also behind the glovebox, I think - that tends to fix this problem when replacing the resistor pack hasn't. A quick search should turn up some information...

Has anyone any experience of the heater fan running on speeds 1, 2 and 3 when the engine is turned off and the ignition key removed. If you have you may (like me) have come out to a flat battery in the morning. Normally the fan and speed control work perfectly from off, through to full speed. It's as if the resistor pack is getting power from somewhere because the with the keys removed the fan will not switch off or run at speed 4. Of course, just to make it a bit more difficult, the problem is intermittent. Any help would be much appreciated.

Just thought i'd mention guys, you were saying that my blower problem was down to the heater resister pack failing, due to water ingress/pollen filters, and that telltale signs were a sopping wet passenger footwell............mine has never even been wet at all, not even damp.

Does this make a difference? thanks guys.
