My current pet hate.....

The one thing guaranteed to pee me off more than anything at the moment is the amount of 'Americanisms' popping into our everyday lives.

Example; Earlier today, While queing to pay for Diesel, the young guy in front of me wished to purchase a packet of fags.

"Can I get 20 Marlboro please"....

Can I get? Yes you probably could.

So I stopped him there and then, chastised him (in a freindly, non threatening manner of course) and made him ask again, which he did!!!

"May I have 20 Marlboro please...."

Yet again, another service provided by myself.

Now, where's my tube of scratch X...... My lorry appears to have been 'keyed'....

My pet hate has to be when people (drivers and pedestrians) dont make a gesture to say thanks when I give way to them. That really does annoy me.

Americans corrupt every language they come into contact with - including English. That said, the American spelling of certain English words (e.g. humor, color), is more logical/phonetic and more easily learned and understood by non-English speakers.

I know what you mean. Some phrases have crept into our language unbidden. Having said that, it may not necessarily be the case that all have crossed the Atlantic. As a Scot I would be quite used to hearing someone ask if they could "get" something as opposed to the more gramatically correct "have". Most British dialects and accents have their foibles too, and are all the more interesting for it I suppose.
