    Default Battery Light

    Hi guys,

yesterday on a long(ish) drive the battery light came on and remained on for the rest of the journey, it goes off when i switch the ignition off but comes back on after another few miles i have just been out in the car today same thing happened only when i parked it in the drive i seemed to have lost my power steering? Is this a sign of the alternator packing in?

Any help and i would be grateful. I have asked about the recall and aparantly my car isnt under the range.

    Thank

Check the aux drive belt is still there. If it is then it could be the alternator has died. The power steering is driven by an electric pump so you lose electrics, you lose power steering
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Thanks for the reply, i just got the RAC out as i have the homestart with them and they confirmed it was the alternator, its packed in and no longer charging the battery

Going tomorrow to get my one reconditioned, ( i really cant afford to spend loads of cash on a brand new unit as just had new brakes, new tyres, service and road tax ) Its costing me £110 to have my old one taken off, reconditioned and fitted back on the car, getting 3 month warranty with it. Does this sound alright?

£110 is about right, BUT.. it's worth checking with VX first if your car was subject to the alternator recall on the 1.9 150's.... it's around the right age and if it is under the recall then they'll fix it for nothing..

    Eek

I got exactly the same thing. Car wouldn't start one morning, charged battery, got it running and took for test drive. After 2 mins battery light came on, power steering failed and every warning light under the sun came on. Limped home and got it to local garage, Not VX as warranty expired 8 days earlier, who agreed it was the alternator. Heard about alternator faults and took to vx dealer who agreed to pay 40% of bill as warranty had only just expired (total bill should be £500). But, get this, Vx dealer can't supply new alternator for 6-8 weeks!!!! and won't supply courtesy car as warranty expired. Has anyone ever heard of a 6 week wait for an alternator, or even a 6 week wait for any repair at all? Seems Vx have a problem with alternators on this model (2005 150 CDTi SRi). I can get a Bosch one next day or a reconditioned on today but Vx wont use them.
