    Default Laptop advice

Right, time to upgrade my laptop.

I have a budget of around £550 and it has to come from PC world or Currys - yes I know, crap. Thats down to the insurance company's way of paying as its on a card thingy!

Its only going to be used for internet surfing, photos etc. Very little gaming.

So can anyone recommend one from their websites? I realy have no idea whats best!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

£550 should get you something quite reasonable. Do you prefer a 15.4" or a 17". ? which obviously depends how much portability is a issue.

Most will be Intel Core 2 duo based (and is preferable) so it comes down to make.? Ram and Hard-drive size.

If you want decent sound from the Laptop I suggest you check out some of the Toshiba models which use kardon Harmon speakers and sound quite decent for a laptop. Its unlikely you will get a Laptop with a dedicated graphics card for 550.

I would suggest you stay away from most Fujitsu models unless you like very poor sound quality ( some are even mono sound) and flexy keyboards.

You will notice models in all the PC World, Currys, Dixons etc called Advent, These are their own brand, made specifically for them. They are okay but fetch very little 2nd hand and parts are nigh on impossible to obtain once out of warranty.
I'm not going to recommend a particular model, but if I was currently buying I would certainly be looking at the Toshiba models, Acer is also reasonable as is some of the HP models

Thanks that was what I was thinking. I don't need a massive screen or a dedicated graphics card really. I have a sony one at the moment which has been excellent. I do like the Acer ones, the advent ones are ok, I'm very unlikely to sell it and if it goes tits up out of warranty it may fall down the stairs etc.

I have seen the Toshiba ones with the Kardon Harmon stuff, but I don't like what they look like!

What are the HP and Dell ones like?

I would look at Toshiba and HP personally, Acer seem to have slipped in the quality stakes in the past year or so in a effort to stay at their price level (plus their support leaves a lot to be desired).

I have been told that 2gb of ram isn't really enough to run Vista? Will it struggle with that? Although I know that vista license does allow down grade to xp.

toshiba are very reliable ive had one for years and never any issues. if your not going to be downloading loads of stuff id not be intrested in a big hard drive though you should get atleast 80g at that price but i would make sure you get about 1gig of ram. btw if your insurance company insist aon currys they're telling you wrong you have a legal right to shop where you like as long as its the same price, if any extra you pay yourself john lewis is worth a look as they will look after you if it goes wrong , currys will be useless if a return is required.

Vista should run fine with 2GB (but better with more). Make sure you don't use Norton or McAfee AV and you'll have a nice machine.

Not all Vista licenses have downgrade rights by the way, although you can get some Toshiba's and HP's with the appropriate disks in the box (sometimes they come with XP preloaded and have the Vista disks in the box).

Is this right? It was via tescos and they send like a gift card with the money on it, but it can only be used in currys or pcworld

I don't intend to run norton, its rubbish. Didn't know that with the vista licences. Bloke at work told me - our IT guru

I have been looking at THIS one
