Default Engine Warning Light Diagnosis - DIY?

    Hi All,

Well my car is in for a new wheel bearing at the dealers (local garage didnt have the special tools!) I nice painful £277!

To add more pain they say the engine managment light has come on - I noticed it does seem to stay on for a second or 2 but does go out.

My real question is do I really have to pay out £40 to get a diagnosis at the dealers....any other options...DIY?

Any pointers for other places to go in the Loughborough area would be appreciated.

...all I can hope is that the light doesnt stay on for me like it did the dealers - want to get it sorted still have 6 months third party warranty

    Thanks, Mark

i'd be asking them for a free tech 2 session since it came on while on while in thier care.... doesn't take to long to diagnose fault... even if the only get the fault code here is the list to see yourself...

If it comes on and goes out after a few seconds/mins then ignore it unless it comes on again while driving. Its saying its recorded a fault code that is no longer active It happens some times.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the quick replies..........

Just drove the car back from the dealers.....the ligth comes on when starting and lingers about a little bit but goes out with all the other lights.

Is this an old fault then?

Will battery off for 30 mins remove it?

Also - I am interested in these code readers from ebay - any recommendations?

Basically I feel the 3.5 year old Vectra I have is turning into a money pit

    Thanks, Mark

Most non Tech II code readers are somewhat basic...but if you are thinking of buying one, try www.amazon.co.uk as well.

what special tools??? they don't need any to do a vectra wheel bearing ..

sounds like you've been fobbed off....

as for the management light....either disconnect the battery for 20 mins or get it read.. it's a redundant code now, so don't worry about it..

    obviously 'real' vauxhall 'experts'..

with regard to the engine management light, its come on, on my 1.8 but there doesn`t seem to be any noticeable problems, iv`e noticed on the thread it said to disconnect the battery for 20 mins to clear it, will i have to re code the radio after doing this? plus how or why is it a redundant code? and what was it there for to diagnose before its redundancy? thanks

Re: stereo code, depends on how old the car is and if full canbus or halfcanbus.

full canbus - 4 buttons and 2 scroll wheels on the steering wheel.
half canbus - 6 buttons on the steering wheel.

halfcanbus, it will need a code.
    full canbus ,it won't.
