Eibach springs are as good as any
I wish Eibach made regular height ones, Vx springs & shocks are complete crap.

    ^^What they said

Eibach springs, about £130 from LMF. Bilstein B4 dampers are around £40 a corner, I think the cheapest place for those was EuroCarParts.

Hey presto! Irmscher suspension without the VERY expensive stickers

In terms of lowering the car, but retaining some ride comfort, are the Eibach the best, or is it worth spending more?

The lower you go, the harder the ride will be. Eibachs only lower -30mm, but the handling is out of this world compared to standard. And they're one of the best-known and most respected brands out there. TBH, I don't know what else you could get that would cost more.
