Might even find the intercooler hose has blown itself off the throttle body.
    Agreed!
The only time my Dti smoked heavily is when the boost pipe had a split.

Coming back from Carlisle this morning, my Vectra suddenly started chucking out loads of black smoke. Sure enough the pipe between the turbo & intercooler was split. I've done a temporary repair with gaffer tape and shall get a new pipe.

My question is, why should the area of the engine around the split be sooty - it should just be clean air going through that pipe - does it sound like the exhaust gasses are mixing with the inlet air - anyone else had this problem?

there will be oil from the spilt as there is a oil feed into the inlet befor the turbo so all your turbo pipes will be oilly and when split the oil get sprayed out of them
