Getting quite a bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust when going through the gears. First thought was the turbo, but black smoke comes out before the turbo starts whirring... Any ideas?

has your car got a box or a remap
You have a diesel car... You get black smoke No problem
Lol,
Just what I was thinking! The vast majority of diesels (unless they have a particulate filter afaik) make a puff of smoke when you boot them!
No box or re-map. Completely standard DTi engine. I know to expect black smoke from a diesel but im not booting the car and a vast amount of thick black smoke comes out. Almost seems like its burning oil, but why would that be? Car only had a major service about 3-4000 miles ago.
Are you using cheap supermarket fuels? My Bora smokes quite a bit on the supermarket fuels the worse one was Morrisons for me. I stick to Shell nowa days and get better MPG.
Have always used supermarket fuel and never had this problem. Would love to use more expensive fuels from companies such as shell but living on a tight budget lol. Morrisons doesnt seem to be too bad from up here!
Try checking your turbo boost hoses for splits as when my hose split excessive black smoke was the first symptom I had.
I get 3-5 mpg less on the supermarket stuff.
A tanker driver told me the core fuels are the same but the branded fuels have adatives, I assume to reduce carbon etc.
We also have an Audi TT and that runs like a bag of crap on supermarket stuff and occationaly we stick some V-power petrol through it and it seems to give it a mini tune up for a a while.
