Ive had another look tonight and if i grab the top of the rear wheels from behind and pull them towards me there seems to be a little bit of play, is this normal ?

Its MOT time very soon , knowing my luck it will be something that makes it fail

Surely if you have some play like you described the mot tester should have picked up on it...

I had a quote from the local dealer for the rear bushes and they quoted me £320. He said that the parts we're only £8 each but it required three and a half hours labour, I've not taken the offer!

My Vectra had a creaking rear end under braking. Sometimes quiet (usually when garage had it) and at other times so loud that people in the street turned to look. Garage had it 4 times before they solved the problem. Car was still under warranty so they just changed most of the o/s/r suspension. I'm afraid they never did find out exactly what made the noise.

Try dropping the rear seats and then give them a firm locking when you put them back up.
