Default Droning Noise from Wheels - worst at 50mph

    Morning All,

    I have a 05 plate Vectra 1.9CDti with 40k on the clock.

The vehicle has developed a droning noise which I think is coming from the front wheels, this is the loudest at 50mph. I dont really notice any handling problems at any speeds.

I have been reading all about tyres, wheel bearings etc but would like opinions on my particular case.

I was told via my last service that it has got a noisy wheel bearing...could it be that has got worse?

The tyres I have on are - Front Michelin, done about 6k miles, original Bridgestone(? - I would check - but its raining!) on the rear.

Also, any advice on good garages in the LE11 area - the dealship is too expensive!

    Many thanks, Mark

Sounds like the bearing to me mate. Had the same symptoms. You can get the part for about £65 from ebay and a local garage should only charge you 1 hours work, about £40. Bearing is over £100 from dealer so money saved by doing it this way. HTH. Just pop into you local garage and get them to check the bearings and say they can fit it for you. Odds on they wont charge you for for checking them.

There is a recall on wheel bearings that applies to some models
Mine isn't in the range, but VX have decided to replace them all as a warranty claim and monitor

Don't drive at 50, to avoid the noise, turn up the radio too.

    Morning All,

    Thanks for all the replies.

I had a quieter driver to work this morning as I was stuck behind a lorry so couldnt make it up to 50 mph!

The car is booked in for a look tomorrow morning so fingers crossed this can all be sorted quite quickly (and cheaply).

One further question - I have a 4th year warranty, would a wheel bearing be covered by this - I believe the dealership tried to get this work done when the car was in for a swirl valve last month but couldn't as it was only 'noisy'. What do people think?

One final thing - how safe is it driving with this problem - I do 34 miles a day and this noise has been around for about a week (a lot worse now tho'!).

    Thanks, Mark

the bearing will just get noisier.. it won't fail and leave you stranded.. just deaf..

the 4 yr warranty should cover bearings and they really should have changed it last month.. Vectra bearings don't fail and present loads of float at the wheelrim, they just growl and get progressivly louder..Take it back and tell them that it deffo needs changing..

Not that bad mate, straight forward if you have a torque wrench. The only reason I got mine done at a garage was that I couldn't get the Hub nut off, Mark (GSi3.2) said it would be ferkin tight, and he was right, it bent my socket set in half .
