Default 1.9CDTi EML light on until engine started

    Good Morning All
I had been pumping the tyres for going on holiday, with a 12V electric compressor, and I had to have the ignition turned on to power the cigarette lighter socket. I switched off and disconnected the compressor but later when I went to start the car the "spanner light" came on with the ignition turned on. The engine started, the light went out and the engine appeared to be okay. I went out for a drive and it runs fine, not in limp home, no smoking just driving the same as usual.

However switching off the engine then turning the ignition back on causes the EML light to come on again until the engine is started. What is this likely to mean? Do I carry on and see what happens, do I get the fault code read or is there something else for me to try?

I would welcome any advice bearing in mind I'm off on holiday in a few days.

    Thanks.

    Brian

The later ones do as a matter of course. If it stays on for a few seconds afterwards and goes out, then it's flagging a fault.

    Totally normal, Don't panic!!

Thinking about things now I'm a little confused. Is the EML indication the light with the big spanner symbol or the engine symbol? What's the difference between the two when faults are displayed?
Also what should be displayed and where when the Flexi Service due mileage is nearing?
    Thanks again.

INSP is displayed or the car with an oil can symbol when it needs a service...

if it's a minor fault, then the car and spanner will come on when the key is in posn 2 before you start it..then, when you start it it will go out. This is telling you that there 'was' a fault but that it's now gone.. it's only a real issue if it's permanently alight...

Thank you both for your assistance. As soon as you see a new light come up on the dash you see £££££ signs before your eyes.

Any idea of how long the spanner light will show in ignition key position two position presuming this not a permanent situation.

it will stay lit like that untill the car has been started a number of times (usually 20-30) or a fault is once again detected. if you have a spare half an hour, sit in the car just starting it up then switching it off. remove the key each time and allow 20 seconds for the car to power down and the imobilizer to kick in. worked for me.

    Thanks OB
I'm up to 20 engine starts since the original fault so I may take your advice and do the rest sitting on the drive.

    Good morning all

The "spanner" light did go out eventually as suggested but it was more than 30 engine starts and 10 days after the problem appeared. I have wondered since if each engine start needed the ignition key taking out and/or a certain time period between each restart?

Anyway the Vectra is running well again at the moment, having covered over 2000 miles in the last week or so at just above 50mpg average.

    Thanks again for the advice.

    Brian
