Information required re automatic gearbox

I've bought a 2.2 DTi with a faulty automatic gearbox which I intended to fix myself.
I called into a place that only repairs automatic gearbox's to get some advice infact this guy does the repairs for the VX main dealer.
Anyway I explain the fault and he tells me staight away that coolant has entered the gearbox and the antifreeze has damaged the friction material etc. Anyway he then tells me that the gearbox swap and then VX modification doesn't work the fault will reappear the only way to fix it is a gearbox swap and then a modification which includes a new air cooled radiator for the gearbox.

Has anybody else heard of this mod?
I sure the guy's information is correct but I'd like to do some of the work myself.

Failing this I'm considering converting the car to a manual has anybody done this or have any information on the conversion?

Just out of interest...which gearbox place did you go to?

he's correct in that the only real cure is a new or rebuilt gearbox... don't try to flush it...and i hope it was cheap, as the jobs quite a big one and the boxes aren't cheap....

The car was cheap but not that cheap to justify a £2200 repair. LOL

I'm not having much luck finding a secondhand box or anyone that does an exchange box.

I'm seriously considering the conversion to manual tho but I'd need to get my hands on donar car because the gearbox guy did say he's already started doing rebuilds on cars that have aready had a replacement gearbox with the VX mod.

The one thing that is apparent reading this forum is that Vauxhall have a major design flaw that they are getting away with sorting out and this is saving them thousands.

Vauxhall did not design the gearbox, I dont know who designed/makes them but these boxes are also found in the Volvo S80 as well as other GM makes such as Saab. These early boxes are a bit weak, its not just the Vx coolant leak that causes the boxes to go kaput, design and part faults in the box themselves cause problems...this was the case with mine...However, once the box is rebuilt with all the mods and updates done they are supposed to be reliable, ( no problems with mine -touch wood!) and they do seem more confident some how!!
