We ride between litherland and maghull which doesnt sound far, its about 3 miles as the crow flys but more around 10 on the canal route.
Only thing I can say is look out for crazy arse swans!
If you do this I might give it a go aswell.
Have a look at the charities or go to the libray to see if anything is running in your area..
How about getting a few people together and then aproching a charty of your choice....
I would be up for it, depends on when you are looking to do it; more likely next year for me...
We used to get the train to Parbold from Wigan and cycle up the canal to Top Lock by Haigh Hall quite regularly. Was about 8-9 miles and about 8 or 9 pubs along the way too . Happy days
quick google revealed this story..

hope you have a comfy saddle! thats a fair distance, it will keep you fit!
There are annual events that cover this, but fancy doing a ride with no so many riders.. a handful at most would be best.
It will either be within the next couple of months or next year if I don't get the time this year.
I used to live near Parbold and have done quite a few miles on the canal there, even went past Haigh Hall just the other day on it.
to right.. I done 20 miles yesterday on it and definitely need a new one.
I done 45.5 miles on my bike yesterday with a top speed of 44.1mph! , so I think the canal should be ok. Going to do it this year (more of a rec ride) and then organise one for next year if anyone is interested??
Any sponsorship welcome Charity will be Cancer Research (will probably be through JustGiving.com nearer the time)
