Default Just how British is the Vectra?

References to and comparisons with German cars like Audi, VW and BMW are often made when talking about our cars. Leaving aside the fact that UK-destined Vectras are made in Germany these days, is the design of the Vectra a British design with German input, or the other way round, or totally British-designed?

Clearly Opel and VX have learnt a lot from the Germans. For example I read that the guy who designed the interior of the Vectra 'C' came from Audi and as a result the interior was better with better plastics, and switches and trim that is less likely to fall off.

I suppose we should not be surprised the Insignia reminds people of BMW Mercedes Audi etc. I always thought that the side of the Vectra 'C' hatch was very BMW-ish.

    Just wondered what others think.

I would say the only thing British about the Vectra is the fact that 50% of worldwide Vectra production is sold in the UK, (with Germany taking a further 33%). Opel's engineering/R&D operations probably dwarf Vauxhall's, so the British input will have been minimal.

    Not much.
The cars sold over here do have some testing input from the UK (there were lots of disguised Insignias spotted in a certain part of Bedfordshire, where there's a test route used by the drivers.) -this was implemented after the amount of crticism that the Vectra B and early C got for it's ride and handling, which were set up for German roads.

is that true? I know that 33% of all models Opel/Vx are sold in the UK/Ireland and if I'm not mistaken the Vectra is or was the best selling car in the UK.

And what concerns the original question... this surprises me because Opel is as German as Audi, VW or BMW... Based on the important salesmarket, they'll probably listen to Vx, but R&D is 100% German (within the GM budget). However these days, most cars are European cars.

As was my old Vectra Active too, and my current 2.0T. But production at Ellesmere Port ceased in 2004 in readiness for the start of production of the Astra 'H'.

My facelift came from Germany. Facelift was done because they had to change the setup of the car for english roads (suspension and handling) rather than german roads, hence the facelift. You won't find many Veccie's in Germany on the road compared to other German manufacturer's

Very true indeed, the Insignia reminds me of the Audi A6; my friends stated that it looks very nice in the flesh...
