Default MPG on a 3.0 cdti

While on the way home today my trip computer told me i had a range of 418 miles, 5 miles later when i had got home it said i only had 380 miles left. also as i was reversing onto my driveway the average MPG had gone down by 0.3. surely over the 10 seconds of reversing onto my driveway this shouldn't have gone down this much. and as for the range going down by that much surely it is impossible. i was driving sensibly.

Has anyone else exprienced this problem?

Also what MPG are 3.0cdti owners getting?

    cheers

The range is based on the stored current average MPG
If you have recently reset the average then that would explain the unusual results
It is more accurate to reset the average then leave it for about 120 litres and to then see what the figures are like

I reset mine the day I took delivery and have not touched it since
The average MPG started at 28.2 mpg slowly rose to 32.0 mpg and is now at 33.2 mpg
It's been there for the last 20K miles

I don't use the range, as it tends to vary quite wildly
I prefer to work on the assumption that each mark of 1/8th of a tank of fuel is 50 miles

On my last long run I did 400 miles and had 1/4 of a tank left on the gauge. I didn't fill it up to work it out exactly, but I think it would have easily done 450+ out of that tank.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It does seem to vary wildly, depending on your recent driving history. For example, I filled up in France a week ago, and my range showed as 560 miles ( a new record for me!). 20 miles or so later, it was down to 460. I can only assume it's because I'd spent almost 2 hours on the motorway getting to the tunnel, then drove around local roads for the next few miles.

The trip computer calculates range on how you have been driving over the last 25 miles or so, so it can vary considerably if you have been driving particularly fuel-efficiently or fuel-inefficiently. It also depends on the sender detecting the correct amount of fuel remaining in the tank. Senders are known for giving incorrect readings. My own trip computer seems to have a life of its own once it gets past threequarters-used, once going down 20 miles in a mile and a half, and when I refilled the tank the range was 260 miles which went up to 300 in the next 60 miles driven, which would suggest a total range of 360 which I would have expected. Trip computers are a guide to fuel consumption, nothing more, nothing less, and in a petrol car do not make good reading LOL

I average about 370 - 400 a tank on a combined. The range counter varies massively.
