    Default Timing belt/chain

Afternoon folks, My 2002 LS 1.8 has just reached the magic 77,777 miles and I got to thinking about my timing belt. Should I get it done by my regular guy (Suzuki dealer at the foot of the street) or is that a dealer job ? Haven't called for any quotes yet but was just wondering.

    Cheers

You've left it nearly 80k without a belt change?

That aside, any competent mechanic will be able to do it. Don't give the dealers the satisfaction

Where ever you get it done, I would get them to change the waterpump and all the idler pullys and the belt tensioner whilst they are doing it, all worth while whilst the belt is being replaced. I see no reason why your " bloke" down the road can not do it all he needs is the VX pully "locking tool".

I bought it at 39.400 mls from a Vauxhall dealer and they done the first service ( around 55,000ls) a year later but not sure if they would have done it, that's one reason I want it done. What kind of price would I be around for all the bits and pieces like the water pump etc?

    Thanks for the replies folks.

No they wouldn't have done it. It costs about £220 from a vx dealer. It should really be done a lot earlier than you have left it. IMO your very lucky it hasn't snapped!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Depends on the engine and who you talk to. My impression is that it's 40,000 on petrols to play safe, but don't know about diesels but VX's 10 years/100,000 is not to be taken seriously. I remember some years ago they pulled back the intervals on some petrols from 60,000 to 40,000 after a number of belt failures.

Chains should last the life of the vehicle if properly looked after.
