    Default Car key question

Last night i had the mis-pleasure of paying a locksmith £70 to come and retrieve the wifes car keys that had got locked inside her Vitara (she doesnt have a spare!!)

Seeing that it would prob cost upwards to £100 to get a proper one cut at the dealers - is it possible to get a normal (non-transponder) key cut just to open the doors? i.e, say the keys got locked in again - use the non-transponder key to open the doors and then grab the 'proper' transponder key.

How do you lock your keys in the car?? With the Vec having a blipper, I would have thought it extremely difficult to lock them in.

I opened the door to pop the bonnet, left the key on the passenger seat, closed the door and about 10 seconds later.......CLICK.......the b8st8rd doors locked.
Apparently its a security measure that Grand Vitaras have.

I did a similar thing in my ford focus years ago. Luckily the rear windows were not electric and it was possible to play them up and down until I could get a coat hanger through the gap I made.

Autolock is a good and bad design feature.

If you can find someone to cut you a key, shouldn't be a problem.
On the other hand, if it's your only key it might be worth gritting your teeth and getting a fully functional key -if she loses her keys you're totally stuffed!

I really can't speak for other cars, but, auto lock on Vec won't lock the doors if one has been opened.

The only way I can see of locking the keys in the Vec would be to open car door, open window, cloe door, lock door, drop keys in car, and they auto up the window to the top, OR, open door, drop keys in car, lock the doors manually, and close the door. Implausible to me.

Why have you only got 1 key? I would get a proper remote key cut from the dealers. If you lost your key or it was stolen a tow lift truck to the dealer would could a lot more as would the new key/s.

Or (and this applies to pre-face only)....

Unlock the boot with the boot release key on the fob, lay key down in boot whilst getting whatever it was you went in for, close boot leaving key in boot, boot then locks after a short time and voila! I haven't done that, but a few guys on here have.

monkeez - it may be possible to have just the blank cut. On Mrs Duncan's 06 Corsa (obviously cost-cutting on Vx's behalf) the second key was only a blank, no remote blipper. It must have he immobiliser chip in it otherwise it wouldn't be able to start the engine (which it does).

If all you want to do is have a key cut to open the doors, and nothing else, then it may be possible - depends on the system of getting keys cut on those cars. Do you have to show a security card to get keys cut, or are you able to go to a key cutting place with the original and just get the blade only cut?

or close drivers door, open rear door to take your briefcase, close car via remote and put key in jacket, put jacket in the back, close rear door ...

but back to the original question: yes that is possible !
