Lost my turbo too!

My 03 2.2DTI just keeps losing the turbo every journey now... and usually multiple times depending upon the journey. Seems to be when it's under load, not just putting presure on it to overtake, e.g. while on cruise control going up a steep hill on the motorway. There's certainly no way you could ever tow anything never mind overtake anyone. Again usual, turn it off and on again cures it... temporarily.

So far I'm seeing faulty boost sensor and faulty wastegate solenoid as the two key ideas in the threads here - anyone got any evidence to say, replaced & fixed yet?

Two key questions:
1. Anyone able to comment on cost of these parts?
2. Can you fit them yourself? I know the boost one is just on top of the engine under the cover but don't know how delicate it is or whether you need any specialised tools, and in turn, where is the wastegate solenoid & how accessible etc. is it?

Garth, on the 2.2DTi, it'll be the boost sensor needing a good gentle clean, or a split intercooler or charge hose, try the hoses first, check them thoroughly for any cracks or splits.

If not, then whip the boost sensor out, spray it liberally with carb cleaner, agitate gently with a small brush, allow to dry and refit.

I had a similar problem on my 2.0Dti, ( virtually the same engine as yours, just a little bit smaller

) I had cleaned the boost sensor which was completely caked up with crud, but this made no real difference.

I then removed and cleaned out the EGR as I was getting EML warnings about "excessive EGR flow", found loads of carbon crud. Refitted and no improvement in turbo.

Finally I took off the upper intake manifold and cleaned it out with carb cleaner ( it was grubby, but not too bad ) cleaned a load of carbon crud out of mouth of the lower intake manifold/EGR housing.

At the same time I replaced all the dodgy looking vacuum pipe connectors, 4 in all, and discovered that one of the pipes had come loose, leaving the rubber connector attached to the vacuum solonoid. I hadnt seen this before as it looked like the vacuum pipe was ok as you couldnt see the actual pipe, just the rubber connector.

So all re-assembled, took it for a test drive, and everything is back to normal. I'm guessing that the biggest problem was caused by the vacuum pipe connectors being split and by the pipe coming loose from one of them.

Try looking closely at the vacuum piping and connectors, make sure they are all connected and if any connectors are split or in any way loose, just replace them.

This is really helpful - thank you. Does anyone have a quick photo of the pipes in question and where I should be looking? e.g. close to connection or at a particular bend etc?
