confused Upgrading from 16" steels to 17" alloys.

Hello folks,i am a newbie to this forum but would appreciate any help you can give me. I have recently upgraded from a Veccy B 2.2 150 Sri estate to an 04 plate 2.0 Dti LS( Loved my 150 but gotta do a lot of miles for work now and just couldnt afford to keep it,boohoo),and basically I want to get rid of the steels and get some alloys on? id quite happily stay with 16" but like the 17" SRI alloys and would like to know if I can just put them on with no worries,ie, offsets speedo calibration etc? If i get some 17"'s with 215 50's on will the speedo be accurate still?

I did exactly that with my last car. Went from 16" steelies to 17" Sri alloys.

They bolted on no problem but did effect the speedo slightly.

68 MPH on the Tom Tom used to register as 70 on the Speedo.
With the new wheels 70 MPH on the Tom Tom registered as 70 on the Speedo.

Didn't bother me one bit and I eventually sold the car with the 17" alloys still on.

Speedos on all cars are about- 2 to 3 mph out of sync so noyhing to worry about on that score,go ahead and fit the 17s.
And wellcome to the site .

Can you confirm that your present tyres are 215/55/16? If so, then putting on 17's is fine if you drop down a size in sidewall, i.e. get 215/50/17's - the move from 55-section tyres to 50 section tyres compensates for the increase in wheel diameter from 16" to 17".

Or you can go to 225/45/17's and save yourself some money.

Just to chuck a spanner in the works....

There's not a vast difference in size between 215/55/16 and 215/50/17, but there are options within the ECU to compensate for different tyre sizes. There's one option for 16" wheels, one for 17/18/19" and one for 20" - just to keep the speedo calibrated.

But in reality, yes, you can just fit 17s with no problem whatsoever.

I am moving from 215/55/16 upto 225/45/18 the speed calculator on this site suggests it will change my speedo from 60 to 61.6 so how do I change the ecu setting? Tech2? or live with it? very carefully near the cameras.
