    Default Anti Virus packages

For a while now ive been swearing at my pc with its slow internet (20mb) and problems with it closing down and it appears to be a problem with the virgin media pc quard which has antivirus, fire wall, antispyware, identity protection, pop up blocker, parental control and a privacy manager.

So ive had enough and would like to either purchase or download a good piece of kit and hopefully get the speed i am paying for.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Phil

Hi, I experienced the same with the virgin software installed, I took it off and much better now. Cant advise on alternative software though, currently looking for some too.

AVAST AVG (Google AVAST Anti Virus) I think its called, we had Mcfee(?) and it was terrible! Really dragged the pc speed down! AVAST on the other hand, is free! (For the home addition) It found Spyware, and Viruses that Mcfee had missed... Only problem is it doesnt come with a firewall, so you'll have to rely of Windows or buy a seperate one...

But your speed is only a "UP TO..." speed, you'll very rarely, if ever, get that 20mb speed they claim... It all depends on how many people in your area are on line at the same time and how far you are from the exchange.

Point to remember also is that virgin use bandwidth throttling, so during peak hours if you are downloading heavily (past 2gb I think) then they cut your bandwidth to 75% which would be 5ish mb.

After 9pm it should go up again. I have seen 20mb speeds after 9pm but they arent sustainable, the speed is very up and down.

Don't have to have any ISP info loaded on your computer if you're wireless enabled,i run my computer and pick up the signal and it connects straight away, same way as it did after and hour of the set-up process, try CCleaner to help your PC or Laptop run better www.CCleaner.com

First thing to note that if anyone is running XP and using Norton, then your computer will run very slow. It's common knowledge that Norton doesn't like XP and had this problem on my old PC. After trying numerous programmes to look for a virus or another offending programme as it was painfully slow, i removed Norton and oh my god, what a difference.

I've recently purchased a new Dell XPS and i'm running Vista. It came with McAfee but quickly deleted that from the system as this has had problems too. The anti virus i'm using is Avast 4 and it's fantastic. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

And that is all i'm using. I've turned off the Windows Firewall as i a certain programme i use doesn't like it, and i've not had one instance of a virus, trojan, worm etc. If there is anything suspicous, Avast picks it up straight away, tells you what it is and what the best action is, i.e. delete, move to vault etc.

I cannot recommend this programme highly enough!

Snowman, you got your ears on?
