    One I like is that where British Longbowmen were so good that if they were captured they would have their 'drawing fingers' cut off. In the battles with the French the Longbowmen would show the enemy that they still had theirs!! Hence the V sign!!

    I always thought the "rule of thumb" was an old trick for working out magnetic field polarity, and the p's and q's thing came from apprentice printers who confused the two letters when setting type.
    Good post, though, and I can't lick my elbow either, so I got the dog to do it!
