Harpenden ‘Classics on the Common’ is an annual event, organised by the Harpenden Village Rotary Club. It started off when the Landlord of ‘The Silver Cup’ pub invited some of his friends to bring their classic cars to Harpenden for an evening. Now the event attracts around 2,000 classic cars and many more visitors.
Vehicle owners have to book their places in advance and the evening commences at 4pm with all the cars being lined up for display on Harpenden Common.
Although the event is titled ‘Classics on the Common’, people display classics, modern exotica and the ‘weird & wonderful’.
It’s a good social event for Ferrari owners, who also being along their Ferrari branded deck-chairs.
This Model-T Ford had obviously had a re-spray. It’s also for sale.
As dusk falls, some owners depart and others get ready for the second part of the evening. Note the Silver Cup pub in the distance.
This is where it all started…
The main road just South of the centre of Harpenden and alongside the Common becomes a cruising strip for all the car owners.
The road is still open to the public, but is rather more congested than the average Wednesday evening.
This vehicle comes into the ‘Weird & Wonderful’ category….
Classic bikes are also on display…
Some of the local street-racers like to get involved….
While the crowd are egging drivers on to display some wheel burning action, the local Police are present to have a word with anyone getting too exuberant….
This guy’s burn-outs were a little too blatant.
Some locals are unhappy with the event; especially the ‘cruising’ element. Fingers crossed that it will still take place next year…
