They're both right. - the book should also mention the 12 months/20,000 option as well.

There were initially two types of service schedule that the cars could be on - either EcoFlex or EcoService. They came from the factory set to EcoFlex. This was a schedule of up to 20,000 miles or two years, whichever came first. How the car was driven i.e. lots of local driving/hard driving etc. would affect (reduce) when the schedule indicated the next service was due. You can tell if your car is on EcoFlex by pushing in the trip reset button on the dash by the speedo when the ignition is off. If a mileage appears in the display then you're on EcoFlex and the mileage is the current mileage to the next service - based on your driving style since the last service.

If no mileage appears then you're on Eco Service - a straightforward 12 month/20,000 mile schedule. A lot of dealers when they got new cars in would switch the car to this schedule from the factory EcoFlex one - it meant they could ensure that they'd see the owner at least once a year for a service and get their money off them, rather than potentially every two years.

If you're running the EcoFlex schedule and are happy allowing up to two years to pass before a service, you must use the long-life synthetic oil as you have currently. Personally I'd never leave oil in a car for that length of time without changing it, but that's me.

The book states 100k, but there seems to be varying feedback numbers on this, so I asked my main VX dealer recently when mine went in for a oil/filter change and a new EGR, and he was explicit that it was definately 100K.

In that case it should be serviced at least every year as you don't do enough milage. Short journeys are a killer on an engine.

100K At your peril mate I'd recommend 40-60k with the water pump being done too
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Thats up to you, for the cost, not much in it. Regular oil changes will make your engine last a lot longer. You could use 10-40w and change it every year/10k miles. I only do 7-8k a year at the moment, but still use LL oil 5-30w.
