    Default 3.0 cdti turbo noise?

Evenin' gents, can someone help with this problem I have? My 3.0 Vectra has what I can only describe as a metallic whirring noise that gets louder as the revs rise. It happens stationary as well as when driven and if the engine is revved hard the 'whirring' continues after the revs settle back at idle, ie: out of synch with the revs. Also when the engine is switched off this horrible noise continues for a while so I assume it's not pulley/belt related. There seems to be no downturn in performance but it's driving me nuts! Is there a sure fire way to test if the turbo is at fault? (mileage: 74,000). Incidentally the turbo seems to be whistling away quite normally and is obviously boosting properly.

    Any ideas gratefully recieved.

Sounds like either a pre-turbine or air/boost leak
However, the big clue is that the noise continues after you have switched the engine off
This almost certainly points to a air/boost leak

Have someone sit in the drivers seat, that can hold steady revs
With the engine running at just under 1500rpm
Feel over the engine bay for any unusual air jets
    There shouldn't be any
However, lifting the engine revs to about 2000rpm should be enough to activate the turbo, which you should be able to hear
Again, feel over the engine bay for any unusual air jets
Switch the engine off, then repeat

I will give this a go,but would that cause a whirring noise? earlier today someone had suggested waterpump, is that atall likely??

I've never heard a waterpump over the noise of an engine, always need a homemade stethoscope for that!
Usually when the waterpump has failed there is a metal to metal noise which stays in step with the revs, but it usually stops when you turn the engine off
Also often accompanied by water loss in the cambelt area

The only wiring noise I get is if I have had my A/C on for ages and its working hard. Maybe that?

That's a good point, although the air con makes a kind wheeze noise as soon as you switch the engine off as the pump looses pressure

That might be the wheel bearing inner ring needing replacing
Starts off sounding like tyre noise, gets gradually louder, and is then joined by a harmonic vibration which is what my car is now suffering from
The rear tyres and brake discs are also show signs of deformation, so will also need replacing, but all these will be replaced under the warranty claim

Mine was due to be done last week, abandoned due to wrong brake parts, rescheduled for today, and abandoned again
The reason given this time is that Retailer Warranties advised that a new part is going to be available shortly, so the dealership will return what had arrived and wait for this instead
