Prison Life and What to Expect on the Induction Wing
By Bob Croxton
Induction Wing
After the degrading and some what humiliating experience of getting through the prison reception process, the new inmate will now be escorted to what is described as an induction wing. the induction wing is their to help inmates cope with the shock of being in prison.
The First Week:
Most prisons throughout the UK regardless of security category will place a new inmate on an induction wing for at least a week before they are allowed on normal location. This is done for many reasons such as to see how the inmate copes with prison life, especially if it his or her first time in prison, also it is easier to assess and process someone in the first week of their jail sentence. This also allows the new inmate to take in all the information that will be getting thrown at them such as work whilst in prison, healthcare, accommodation, resettlement, education, courses that you have to take, how visits work, AP’s, gym and food etc. For a first timer all this can be very confusing.
Learning to Cope:
For new inmates their first week in prison is very daunting, confusing and often frightening. He or she will be placed in a cell with a complete stranger, which in its self can cause problems. A non smoker could have to share a cell with a heavy smoker or even a drug user. A young man could end up sharing a room with an elderly person. Simple things like snoring or watching television into the night can cause disruption and upset.
Food:
Prison food is not as bad as it is made out to be, the only problem is that you have to eat what you are given. All prisons throughout the UK have to provide food for many different religions such as Muslims etc, also specially prepared food for vegans, vegetarians and even medical diets for people who suffer from the likes of diabetes are on offer. There is however a choice of food and all inmates are given a pre-prep food order so that they can select the meal of their choice. The individual, even if they have changed their mind, will now have to eat that food.
Using the Toilet:
New inmates very often struggle with the idea of having to use a toilet in a cell in front of their new padmate. For most people it will be the first time that they have had to share a room, never mind a toilet, with someone else since they were children. The prison service is now trying to provide all inmates with better, more hygienic and private toilet facilities. This however does not apply to all prisons and in some establishments the inmates are still slopping out.
Education and Employment
Throughout the first week, inmates will be given detailed talks on the various facilities such as courses, employment and education that are on offer to them. Inmates will quickly learn that is up to them to find a good job or get on the education or gym classes that they want. Unfortunately in prison you have to learn quickly. This is an alien environment to many and although in civilian life they can find work or no people to speak too, you often find that a new inmate just doesn’t know how to cope or who to turn. But as the weeks progress all inmates start to learn and cope with prison and prison life. All new inmates will have to go through an education board which consist of completing various basic skills test and also a one to one interview with a tutor. This assessment enables the prison to advice you if new to go on any educational courses. Towards the end of the induction week all new inmates will be placed on a labour board where they will be given a job unless the inmate has chosen full time education.
The Doctor:
All new inmates will now under go a thorough medical examination by the prison doctor. Inmates will be asked if he or she is on any kind of medication or have medical problems. If so the prison has a “Right of Care” to provide the inmate with adequate medication. Because of the risk of disease within the prison the doctor will recommend that you have a serious of injections to fight of any chance of catching Hep C or B. It is worth noting that a lot of infectious diseases can be caught in prison through the shear volume of inmates who are housed their. A simple cold can become an epidemic in prison because of the close proximity of the inmates and staff.
Seeing loved Ones for the First Time:
The average visit last between one and two hours and the inmate is made to sit in a coloured chair that is designated for inmates, physical contact is very limited. The first visit can be very traumatic especially if they have children. It is not uncommon for the emotions of what has happened to you and your family to hit you as soon as you see your loved ones.
Before you will have even seen your family, they will have been subjected to a rigorous search by prison officers in reception just to make sure that your wife, children or mum or dad or not smuggling drugs or any other illegal objects that are not allowed into the prison. The visit is now nearly over and the officer has just indicated to you to start to say goodbye to your family and friends, then it hits you like a ton of bricks, there going home and your not. The isolation, the hopelessness and the reality of that you really are in prison now hits you hard.
Conclusion
After what can be described as the most traumatic week of your life, the new inmate is now ready to be placed on normal location. Life behind bars now starts to become easier.
