I think Vectra-B's are absolutely rubbish - my opinion and I'm entitled to it, and I haven't even been racist, sexist, xenophobic or whatever in expressing it. If that still makes this a thread that needs to be closed then go ahead.
And if anyone wants to know why I hold that opinion, then here you go:
1) The shape of the car, apart from being unattractive, was far too similar to the Cav3, and didn't represent any significant progress over the model it was replacing - not a criticism that can be levelled at the Cav3 when it came out in 1988, or the Vec-C in 2002. When I saw the first spy shots of the early prototypes being tested, I couldn't believe GM-design had been so lazy as to give it a door shape that looked identical to the Cav3. Then they tried to rescue the design with the weird door mirror housing.
2) I found GM's cost cutting and cynicism shocking - producing most models minus the pasenger's airbag and just leaving a gaping hole in the dash instead.
3) It was also under-engineered, which is why GM, or more likely Vauxhall kept changing the spring and damper rates throughout the 1st year of production in order to make it handle better on UK roads. The UK was a major market for the Vectra even then and not developing it on UK roads until after it went into production was extremely shoddy. I drove over 20 examples during the first year as part of my job, and the differences in handling between them was startling.
4) The problem with the seat foam being "17%" too firm and the supplier being blamed for it were typical of the lack of thoroughness in the engineering and production process - where was the GM quality control for their suppliers? The Vectra-B was GM's version of Ford of Europe's 1990 Escort - i.e. under engineered, designed with a lack of respect for the intelligence of the buyers and deservedly panned by the media as a result. In both of these cases the respective companies learnt the hard way to try a lot harder next time, hence Ford created the vastly superior Focus and GM the Vec-C.
Therefore, with the above rational and properly constructed argument, I put to you Sir that a forum that exists to celebrate the Vec-B does in the process celebrate a poor quality and under engineered car that does not deserve such adulation.
There you go, now you can shut this thread down just like you did to one I started earlier this evening.
