    Default Vectra-B ... The Truth

I think Vectra-B's are absolutely rubbish - my opinion and I'm entitled to it, and I haven't even been racist, sexist, xenophobic or whatever in expressing it. If that still makes this a thread that needs to be closed then go ahead.

And if anyone wants to know why I hold that opinion, then here you go:

    1) The shape of the car, apart from being unattractive, was far too similar to the Cav3, and didn't represent any significant progress over the model it was replacing - not a criticism that can be levelled at the Cav3 when it came out in 1988, or the Vec-C in 2002. When I saw the first spy shots of the early prototypes being tested, I couldn't believe GM-design had been so lazy as to give it a door shape that looked identical to the Cav3. Then they tried to rescue the design with the weird door mirror housing.

    2) I found GM's cost cutting and cynicism shocking - producing most models minus the pasenger's airbag and just leaving a gaping hole in the dash instead.

    3) It was also under-engineered, which is why GM, or more likely Vauxhall kept changing the spring and damper rates throughout the 1st year of production in order to make it handle better on UK roads. The UK was a major market for the Vectra even then and not developing it on UK roads until after it went into production was extremely shoddy. I drove over 20 examples during the first year as part of my job, and the differences in handling between them was startling.

    4) The problem with the seat foam being "17%" too firm and the supplier being blamed for it were typical of the lack of thoroughness in the engineering and production process - where was the GM quality control for their suppliers? The Vectra-B was GM's version of Ford of Europe's 1990 Escort - i.e. under engineered, designed with a lack of respect for the intelligence of the buyers and deservedly panned by the media as a result. In both of these cases the respective companies learnt the hard way to try a lot harder next time, hence Ford created the vastly superior Focus and GM the Vec-C.

Therefore, with the above rational and properly constructed argument, I put to you Sir that a forum that exists to celebrate the Vec-B does in the process celebrate a poor quality and under engineered car that does not deserve such adulation.

There you go, now you can shut this thread down just like you did to one I started earlier this evening.

In the majority of the threads you have posted you seem (to me) to be looking to create a situation or inspire unhealthy discussion and I just dont understand why, that just isnt what we do here.

I saw your thread earlier and it was closed in order to prevent unnecessary discussion about another forum, which would probably have occurred.

As far as the vec b goes, I thought they were a good looking car despite any technical faults they may have had. Vectra C's are not without fault.

In a few years time when the insignia has been around for a while I wouldnt consider this forum to be stuck in a time warp.

Models of cars loved and not loved by people, forums set up to appreciate a certain model are done so by people that do appreciate them, tolerate their faults and wish to share their experiences.

I respect your opinion to which you are entitled but do not respect the tone of your posts.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion.
But what has recently put peoples backs up is other people ramming such opinions down peopleís throats when the opinion wasn't even asked for in the first place. And it's not always what is said, itís the way it is said.

I have to say that some of that sounds like Clarkson himself !
I agree with some of it to a degree, as an ex-owner of an early Vec B, they missed the mark of a couple of fronts.
But a couple of years later and all the wrinkles had been ironed out to make a great family car.
And thatís not unusual, most, if not all, early cars of an entirely new model, often have an awful lot of modifications made to them over time. Itís a steep learning curve and the public are often guinea pigs.
And the Vec C has to be one of the worst examples of cost cutting and deleting things from later cars I have ever heard of !

Starting off slating another forum is a very good way of getting a thread put straight in the bin, it will not be tolerated no matter what the mark is. We are not going to have inter forum flaming which inevitably happens when the opposing forum gets wind of such threads.

You're absolutely right that you are entitled to your opinion and there's nothing wrong with healthy debate, however that doesn't give you the right in my opinion to put others down ... the majority of our members and staff take pride in the fact this forum is a friendly place to be and as a member of the moderation team I will do what I need to in order to try and retain that environment.

So please feel free to join in debates constructively but if you get the urge to cause upset and mischief for the sake of it then please keep it to yourself

    In your opinion

My opinion FWIW ... after driving a couple of them I personally don't like Vectra-B but I respect that others do and that we all have different tastes ... I also don't like crunchy peanut butter but I know lots of people that do

Your prerogative to think so, and the feeling is mutual.

And on that note this is now closing, you brought it upon yourself.
Take it from me Mr, whether you have one or not, you come across with a hell of an attitude and it IS putting peoples backs up, take the hint and think about not just what you write about but how you put it across.
