    Default Wrong tyres?

Had 2 new front tyres today to pass MOT (2004 Vectra 1.8 LS). After getting home I have noticed the sizes do not match with the existing ones on the rear.

The new front ones are Vredestein Ultrac 225/55 ZR16 and the rear are Bridgestone Turan 215/55 R16 (which I am fairly sure are also the type that were replaced). I checked the handbook for the Z18XE engine and the 225/55 R16 is not listed in the size tables.

Has the tyre fitter fitted an incompatible size? What implications would this have?

    Thanks for any info.

Yup, wrong ones - IF, for whatever reason, you wanted wider tyres on the same wheel and hence chose 225's they have to be 50 section, not 55. 225/55/16 makes the circumference too big, hence your speedo now under-estimates (altho there is some excess built in). Take them back.

Thanks. I thought they looked slightly bigger than the rears, which is why I checked the sizes. I'll take them back tomorrow, hopefully without any bother.

You have wider tyres on the front than the back. I would have thought that you would have the same width tyres all round. Either 225 or 215

215/55/16's are ok and the correct size as per my handbook.

I would ask why the fitter why he put wider ones on the front than the rears

Yea but he's not complaining about the 215's...it's the 225's that are the issue.

I've just done the maths - the 215's have a height (or distance from the wheel rim to the top of the tyre) of 118.25 mm, whereas the 225's have a height of nearly 124mm - that's 6mm out, top AND bottom. That's a sizeable difference in diameter and circumference, which will affect speedo and mileometer readings.

Shouldn't be any problems getting the correct tyres
The question is who quoted the tyre size, was it the customer or the fitter?
Perhaps they were written down and someone else ordered them and misread 215 for 225

It will only affect the speedo reading by 1.9% faster

Or maybe they just put on whatever they had in stock, hoping the customer wouldn't notice.

They had the car as I' left it with them for the MOT. The guy rang me & told me I needed 2 new tyres for it to pass and quoted me for Vredestein - didn't mention sizes at all. I assumed they would fit like for like.
