    Question Petrol Additives

I've had a search but only found conflicting answers and mostly from quite a while back so I thought I'd ask again...

Is it worth using any additive (Redex etc) with normal 95 RON unleaded?

Here's why I'm asking - in the CDTi, the difference between standard and premium diesel was immediately noticeable, the car felt smoother, quieter and more responsive. I've alternated tanks of standard and super unleaded in the 2.8T and I honestly can't tell a difference.

However, I like the idea of keeping the injectors clean even if it doesn't affect the performance, which the SUL and the off-the-shelf additives both do.

Using SUL equates to around £3 extra each tankful. Using (eg) Redex equates to £1.30 a tank.

    Comments/suggestions?

Personally my oppinion on "super" unleaded is it makes no difference i have tried all the different types in my 3.2 and it runs better on the 95 RON fuel and i dont pay for "Premium" fuels i tend to use supermarket brands

However i do run an injector cleaner through it i use Redex fuel treatment for about 2000 miles every 10K or so and the engine does seem to like it, it feels smoother after the treatment the biggest benefit to smoother running i found was the fitment of Iridium plugs ....I know thats not what you asked but every little helps

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

    cheers Drinky.

How often do plugs need changing on Vx service schedule? It's had 3 dealer services now...

And I know they're a pig on the 3.2 - are they as awkward on the 2.8?

5th Gear did an article on additives a few years back. They found that some could actually reduce engine output/economy.....

I'd say you only need to run super in really high performance engines like the Jap turbos or VTECS and I'm not sure the V-Power diesel makes any difference in my 3.0 CDTi.....

As for Redex, never tried it but may give it a go soon seeing as I'm puffing the odd black cloud at the mo!

I would be inclined to believe that using Redex would be no different to using one of the premium fuels with additives in. I'm not bothered about getting a whole extra 1bhp out of it, but I do want to avoid replacing clogged up injectors if I can avoid it!

BTW - one of the big tuners (Thorney IIRC) did a nearly-scientific comparison between 95, 97, 99 and 102 RON petrol. They used the same car, ran it for about 1000 miles on each of the different fuel grades then ran it on a RR. The end result? A whopping 1.5 bhp increase between 95 and 102 RON...

Paul VX reckon on changing plugs every 80,000 miles i did mine at 45,000 not sure what they are like on the 2.8

Jon V6 Redex is not so much an additive as a cleaner it doesn't claim to give big BHP gains it just cleans the system out

And yes some additives can reduce BHP ask Big Phil as he lost about 12BHP on a rolling road by putting an octane booster in his tank !!!!!!!

Gents, you seem to be getting confused between two entirely different products: Octane enhancers and fuel system cleaners. It was 5th Gear I believe who tested octane enhancers and found they didn't do much. Fuel system cleaners are entirely different - they're not something you use with each tank of fuel as an alternative to 98 RON. I've been using STP fuel system cleaner for years on each car I've had and found it to be excellent, however it's to be used only every 6,000 miles - not every week.

SUL does improve performance on remapped petrol turbos, as BSR said it would, and in my experience particularly if you use Tesco 99 ron. I'm no techy, and would stick with 95 ron if SUL made no difference. And I was a total sceptic.

As for performance, I don't really think of it in terms of bhp, more like improved responsiveness, acceleration and smoothness, without harming fuel economy.

Never used additives of any sort - never felt a need to do so. If someone can convince me otherwise I might be tempted to do so.

My mechanic friend put these 2 in when he dropped the oil. I thought I could notice a difference but the car always runs a bit better after a service. I certainly wouldn't bother buying the stuff.
