Default 1.9 DTi 120 Down on power

    *** SORRY - CDTi ***

Anyone got any ideas on this...

Car cruises fine at motorway speeds, put my foot down @ 70 & it accelerates to 80+ fine, as always, yet at lower revs the engine feels dead. If I floor it from low revs, it takes a while to get going & often leaves a bit of blackish (not blue!) smoke behind, then gets over 2000rpm & is fine up till 3000, when it seems to back off again. Releasing the throttle can make it seem to go better, but this could just be me thinking it is as I'm easing up and the car is still going the same.

I drive everyday as part of my job & my fuel consumption has also suddenly lost 3-4MPG as well. This all came about suddenly about 3-4 weeks ago, I can see the change clearly as I need to log all my running costs to claim back via expenses.

I've had the car for 2 years, regularly serviced, no loose pipes or connectors I can see, can't spot any obvious splits in the turbo pipes. I've got a CRD box I haven't been using for a while, I stuck that back on and there's no difference at all, not even the usual gain of power I get with the box.

Any ideas would be most welcome!!

Unhappy 1.9 CTi down on power

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, however the lack of blue smoke had me hoping otherwise..

On that subject, is there any difference between the 150 turbo & the 120 turbo? I've spotted a couple for sale stating they will fit both.

Sounds like it may be Egr Woe's & it is sticking open when it should be closed.

Or even a split boost or vacum hose somewhere !!

my 2.2 DTi does that - only between 1200-1800ish, spotted a leaking joint and its perked up a bit, shame the stealer remapped the turbo after that :-(

maybe it needs a dose of redex to help things along?

Just an update on this - done abt 220 miles today, same symptoms, but I've noticed the power drops off more as it gets hotter. The engine feels almost normal when cold (obviously I'm not revving it much then) the midrange feels fine but this then gets steadily worse as I go further & the motor warms up.

There is still some smoke when flooring it at lower revs which soon clears, but when I pulled off the motorway this afternoon, it left quite a bit of brown smoke behind whilst I was on a closed throttle.

Really wierd as everything sounds fine, no funny noises at all - heres hoping it might not be the turbo...

Has the spanner light come on? If it has, best to pop down to dealers to see what's up on the Tech 2 computer.

Spanner light is on, but its not engine related as I have a code reader and it doesn't see any faults. The spanner icon dissappears when I do a fault reset and remains off until the ignition is switched off and on again, when it re-appears. The light doesn't come on when driving after it has been reset.

My scanner has a specific entry for EGR valve as well and it's returning an Ok signal but I'll pull it off this weekend and clean it out, see if that helps.

My local VX agent wanted £75 just to check the fault for me, which I frankly find disgusting, but the car's going in for the handbrake mod next week so I'll try and get them to plug in then, however I'm not confident this fault is linked as this light's been on for ages - didn't see the point in paying someone £75 to tell me about a fault that wasn't affecting the car.

Cheers for the replies guys, I'm going to drop in some injector cleaner and clean the EGR - see what happens then.
