    confused Unhappy with resale value

    Hi all
Not been on the site for sometime, but had to express my dissmay at the price I was offered for my beautiful 2005(55) signum design 2.2 direct in panaccota, Coloured sat nav, rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers with 23000 on clock, not out of warranty til nov 2008 and in excellent condition, Paid £14000 2 years ago.
Wanted to do downsize to a near new vauxhall Astra- was offer £7000:
against new Honda Civic ex 1.8 - £4000 first offer but pushed to 5500 if deal now
Thinking I ought to trade in now before I have to pay them to have it.
How do these dealers sleep at night?
Sorry got to go and have a good cry ..........................................

I think the message is clear - keep the car.

Why do you want to sell/downsize? Sounds like a nice car. Great colour as well.

The seam to be very low in the value's.
But you say best get rid now as it will soon be worth nothing
No matter what car you have it will be the same. You should hold out for more. It's a buyer market at the moment.

I don't think the 7k offer is too bad, the £5.5k one though is abysmal, you should've said it's a 55 mate not a 53 and embarrassed him, your car will be on sale again for around 8.5k, allowing that a dealer has to prep it and pay vat on the profit 7 - 7.5k isn't far out, cars always fall heaviest in the 1st 24 mths, you paid 14k for a 21k list price car that could only be 6 mths old at the time, so she'd taken a 7k hit already, best advise I can offer is to take the 7k, there is a facelift, same spec miles as yours on there in black for 8.5k, old styles are 7.1k.

Sorry to bear bad news, but that's how it is right now, me, I'd keep it, you will have a culture shock dropping into an Astra tbh.

Just remember what ever car you change it for will take the same hit over the next 12-18months.

Is keeping the car not an option?

The car is used for the wife to travel only 4 miles to work each day, and is through town so was trying to downsize to save fuel costs due to the large increase latley, suppose thats a lot to due with the decreased value of the car.
Thought about keeping it but its only going to get worse. The offer of £4000 was after the honda dealer had rang 7 vauxall dealers to sell on and only 1 was interested at all in haveing it- sign of the times.
May keep it and get extra warranty, got to make my mind up quick though as wants taxing end of the month,
    Thanks all for your input

Unless you are going for a diesel Astra you won't see much of an improvement in fuel consumption tbh, 3 mpg more I'd say, it's a perception that smaller is lighter so is better, but the reality of it is your bigger car is the same car stretched, so the weight is the weight of two pieces of ten inch long thin steel, plus a smaller engine works harder, this is how come a V6 isn't much more uneconomic than say your 2.2 4 potter, it's all about power to weight ratio's.

As for it getting worse I can offer you some good news here, it will and it won't, but your car is nearly 3 yrs old, this is the time cars depreciate worst, if you look at it that it's now lost £14k of it's list price, in a yrs time when it's 4 yrs old you will still get £6k for it, look at the prices of 54 plate ones for sale now for a comparison.

Or put another way, you are about to lose thousands to save hundred's, hth.
