    Default Diesel consumption 2.2DTI/1.9CDTI

I have a 2002 2.2DTI, its done 160,000 + miles and, despite recent efforts to sabbotage it by my wife putting unleaded in it, runs like a dream. OK, it's not the smoothest engine on the planet, but I do a lot of mileage and if I sit at 60 mph on the motorway I can get 70 mpg, which I think is fantastic for the size of the car. I recently purchased a 1.9CDTI Astra Van, I presume it is the same engine as the 1.9 Vectra's. Thing is, for the same speed I get at least 10 mpg less. At 60 mph its down in the mid to high 50's most of the time, way less than my good old Vectra. Anyone know why this should be? Is it all the modern refinements and emission controls that reduce the MPG on new cars, or is it something to do with the Common Rail design?

    70mpg? I think you're dreaming there.

I'm sitting at 44.2mpg from my Astra, it's chipped to 200hp though, and I do press on.

Downhill with the wind behind you maybe!! I assume you're going by the mpg readout on the computer which I find to be about 10% optomistic. The most I've ever done on a trip is 53 mpg & my normal running around is about 46

On a recent trip over 3 days, at the start of the 2nd day the trip was showing 62mpg as I left where I stayed. At the end of the 3rd day and back home - 58mpg over the 490 miles or thereabouts. Now after a total of 1820 miles and back to my normal running the trip is sitting at 53.3mpg.
I have not bothered with the brim to brim method! Car has done 41K miles and I was not hanging about but driving at legal speeds but the roads were clear of tourists plus the fuel strike was on up here at the time and the roads had less traffic than usual.

To compare, my other car (Jaguar S Type 3.0SE Auto) gets 34.9mpg on the outward leg over the same journey, 32mpg overall for the trip and about 28mpg overall with my normal running, again using the OBC and not the brim to brim method so the real figures will probably be a bit less.

First, the CDTI there is a van - not as efficient (aerodynamics etc).
Just looking through the discontinued brochure, Vauxhall official "Extra Urban" mpg for the 2.2DTI is 60.1 mpg, about the same as CDTI. Downhill you may get more than that.

Don't go by trip computers if you want to see accurate mpg figures - the best way is to fill up the tank, and drive until empty. See how many miles you've done on the odometer, and fill up again to see how much fuel you've used.
Trip computers are very inaccurate and misleading.

Years ago I had an oil burner Astra for a few weeks and a friend had a Astra van and he could never get near the mpg figures of the car despite me driving it with the pedal on the floor. The van was brand new though....
