    Exclamation WARNING - Headlight Alignment!

Thought I ought to pass this on - I changed the bulbs in my dipped headlights last week, but hadn't had any reason to use them. I was driving past a small garage yesterday, noticed it was deserted and on the spur of the moment I pulled onto the forecourt and asked them to check the headlamp alignment.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, one light was pointing at the tarmac 5 feet in front of the car and the other was illuminating passing aircraft

So, for anyone else who has to remove the headlamp unit to change bulbs - go and get them checked ASAP!

I really must learn to type constructive and helpful replies rather that the utter drivel i usually type.

As somebody who is due to replace their 'octogenerian glow worm in a jar' standard bulbs with a nuclear reactor of a bulb soon, which bit of the bulb unit are we talking about?
    Detritus.

    Probably just the bulb
It's normal to perform a headlight alignment check after changing the Low Beam bulb, but not many people seem to do it
Even a basic check against a wall should be done!

In my case it was the fact I'd had the entire headlamp unit out to change the bulbs that must have thrown the alignment out - if I could have changed the bulbs without dismantling the front end of the car, believe me, I would have done!

Even the difference between two bulbs can screw up alignment enough for an MOT fail. So, you should get it checked every time you touch the bulb.

Just out of interest - would lowering the car affect the alignment? Obviously the headlights themselves will be that much lower, would the beams then have to be adjusted upwards to be correct again, or would the 30mm drop make no difference?

The lowering shouldn't make any difference, the alignment lamp is placed on to the bodywork
