Default 2.0 DTI Signum stalls - main dealer can't solve it. Can you?!

    Hi Guys,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - please feel free to refer me on a another post if so. I Have seen similar faults on the forum but not specifically the same thing and/or for the 2.0 DTI Signum (05 plate).

Things started with the car going into limp mode several months ago. A Bosch Fuel Inj. specialist diagnosed the EGR valve and suggested a low-cost clean up, which it had. The risk was that the fault would come back again and so would then need a new EGR valve (£400 fitted). Worth a go I thought...

The car was fine for a a couple of months and then the fault came back but this time the car cut out instead of going into limp mode (Orange light comes on). After around 5 minutes it restarted and was fine (in the meantime, attempting to start it led to it feeling like it was only firing on a couple of cylinders and bellowing diesel smoke out the exhaust).

A local garage with a 'generic' Snap On diagnosis tool (not a Vx Type 2 Tester) said it was showing faults for a glow plug, deemed to be not relevant, and the throttle sensor. But as the car was fine now it was 'probably just a blip' and advised that I just 'see how it goes'.

Shortly after, a main dealer diagnosed the EGR valve and replaced it (without me tipping them off about what had happened before - so it was even more credible!). The car seemed better than ever after that, having lost a 'diesely' puff of smoke which it sometimes left behind when accelerating hard.

After a few more hundred miles the fault cames back again. The main dealer has had it another two more times since and can still find no fault, despite a 50 mile test run last time. It seems to happen most in warmer weather and often when dropping to slower roads after a lengthy motorway run.

Each time, leaving it for 5 minutes seems to clear the fault leaving no clues behind for the dealer.

I've tried good diesel, cheap diesel, keeping revs down, giving the car plenty of 'blasts' on open roads - there is no other obvious patterns to what triggers it.

Any clues? I'm tearing my hair out with the thing now, especially now the main dealer is stumped too!

    Many thanks in advance,

    Ian

Default Fault Codes - 2.0 DTI

Ok, this is getting interesting now.

Bosch accredited Diesel specialist has just spent 4 days on the car, following main dealer saying 'nothing wrong mate' even though it breaks down 10-15 times on a 150 mile motorway journey. After very extensive checks, the only problems being thrown up are:

    1. EGR valve, (P0400, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow). A new EGR was fitted three months ago but only solved the problem for 500 miles. Chances of the new one being duff as well?

    2. Glowplugs. All four replaced to be on safe side even though only one actually flagging a fault, I can't see how this is related. Does seem to run better now though...

    3. An 'unknown' code (from Bosch KTS 6500 diagnostic): 569 DFP_GLWCTL_MIN_PATH and DFP_GLWCTL_MIN_TYPE. The engineer does not know what this is.

The question before the car gets part-exd for a Ford (sorry, but patience is spent now) is could the fault be the glowplugs at all or is that just wishful thinking? Anyone know how to diagnose the 'mystery' error code??

Otherwise I'm off to see a man about a Mondeo.

Sorry but I would get the fault codes read on a proper tech-2 or vaux-com. Those snap on ones wouldn't read my car a little while ago but an e-bay £70 one did.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Thanks for the reply Big Sig.

Unfortunately Tech 2 throws no codes...even though the car wont even run for more than 45 mins on a motorway.

Main dealer has tech-2'd it three times since EGR valve replaced and it says everything is ok everytime. No help when you are on the hard shoulder (again).

if there are no codes but the car runs rough then it points towards the vacumn control curcuits..their connectors usually perish and leak the vacumn leading to all sorts of running problems..Have you really checked all the connections?..even a small split will cause running issues..

Good call - I'll give them a good look over. The diagnostic team so far have focussed mainly on sensors/electrical. So this may have been overlooked. Thanks. Will report back!

the vacumn curcuits don't show at all on TECH2 or any other scanner...folks do get hung up on chasing codes when sometimes it's something dead simple

Apparently now resolved: Throttle Sensor. Changed 2000 miles ago and no issues since.

Discovered when it broke down on a main dealer mechanic out for a test drive in it - finally they seem to believe me, rather than the "computer says no" attitude so far.

Interestingly, the non-TECH2 garage/Green Flag man said Throttle Sensor right at the outset several months ago. Dealer and Bosch guys woudn't consider it unless their kit said so, however.

So the morale of the story appears to be:
    1. Back street garage has better experience / test kit than a Vx Dealer!
    2. Nobody believes your word over the computer.
    3. Stick with it, circumstances lead you to a solution in the end...

    Thanks everyone for their contributions.

As someone who's diagnosed faults / restored classic cars for most of his life, I'm seriously disappointed by the lack of diagnosis skills in modern dealers though - seems they just turn a spanner when the computer tells them to... sad.

Was your car out of warranty? I notice it says 2005 in your profile.
Lois Griffin: Peter! You're bribing your daughter with a car?
Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?
