I believe you fill out a certain form (check the DVLA website) and then pay a retention fee for the year, whereby you can put it on any car you wish whenever you want. It is about twice the cost of the re-assignment fee though I think...

I've just done this as I had a private plate on the Zaf before I sold it. You have to remove the plate before you sell and your not allowed to sell the car until all the paperwork comes back from the DVLA.

Your plate is then on retention for a year in which time you can assign the plate to another car without having to pay any more cash.

£105 is correct and as said above, that includes the transfer fee in advance for when you want to put the plate onto your new motor.

If you dont buy another car within the year, its £25 to retain the plate for a further 12 months.

It does take quite a while, think mine was 3 or 4 weeks. I'm just in the process of putting my plate onto the vec now.

3-4 weeks? is that for some other plates to be transferred onto your old car?

I want to sell mine as I have no job but want the plate as that cost me £560.

It took 3 or 4 weeks to get the plate off my old zaf and the paperwork says you cant sell the car until this has been sorted!

It may be quicker for you, it depends how busy they are at the time.

I have just completed a V778 / 1 form to retain a cherished number plate. They quote up to 8 weeks for it all to happen. You cannot sell the car before it is all complete - as you will lose the number if you do.
